Product launch

A product launch checklist for consumer brands

Last updated: November 2026

A product launch checklist confirms that the product, the stock, the price and the sales channel are all ready on the same day.

Launch and Scale is the final step of Cydney Mar's Concept-to-Reality Pathway: take your product to market through retail, direct-to-consumer or TV, and grow. This Spec to Shelf checklist and strategy for product launch connect the launch back to the specifications and samples that came before it.

What is a good strategy for product launch?

A good strategy for product launch starts with one primary channel, matches stock to realistic demand, and tells a clear story about who the product is for. Expanding to more channels comes after the first one works.

Definition

Launch strategy, defined by Spec to Shelf

A strategy for product launch is the plan that decides where a production-ready product is sold first, how much stock is made, what price it sells at in that channel, and how buyers will hear about it. It depends on earlier steps: you cannot set a channel price without landed cost, or promise stock without a vetted supplier.

Channels

Retail, DTC or TV

Cydney Mar has sold through all three: retail (including work with Walmart and Holt Renfrew noted on her site), direct-to-consumer, and her own collections on QVC in 8 countries for 15+ years. Each channel needs its own costing and stock plan.

Product launch checklist

  1. Final samples approved

Pre-production sample signed off against the final spec.
  2. Specifications locked

No open changes in the tech pack or spec sheet.
  3. Production confirmed

Quantities, dates and quality checks agreed with the supplier.
  4. Landed cost and pricing

Price set per channel with the margin calculated.
  5. Labels and packaging

Finished, approved and matching what the channel requires.
  6. Photography and copy

Product images and descriptions that match the real product.
  7. Channel set up

Store listing, retail order or TV program details ready.
  8. Reorder and scale plan

When you reorder, how long it takes, and the next channel.

What's the difference between product development and market development strategies?

A product development strategy creates new products for customers you already serve or understand. A market development strategy takes an existing product to new customers, channels or regions. Moving a direct-to-consumer product into retail or TV shopping is market development; adding a new style for the same buyers is product development.

What are the 7 P's of marketing?

The 7 P's of marketing are product, price, place, promotion, people, process and physical evidence. For a consumer product founder, the first three are set largely during product development: what the product is, what it costs to make and sell for, and which channel it reaches buyers through.

How do I know my product will be profitable?

A product can be profitable when its full landed cost, including materials, labor, duties, freight and packaging, leaves enough margin at the price your channel supports. Retail, TV and direct-to-consumer channels each take different shares, so calculate costs per channel before production. Cost and Margins is a dedicated step in Cydney Mar’s Concept-to-Reality Pathway.

Where do I start with a product idea?

Start with product clarity: write down exactly what you are making, who it is for, and why they would buy it, before spending on samples. That is step one of Cydney Mar’s Concept-to-Reality Pathway. Her free From Idea to Income workbook, offered on cydneymar.com, helps you score an idea and map a path to launch.
